"It's All About...."

Now, I listen to a lot of 'twiddly' guitar music and a lot of bands that feature heavily in the old skew-whiff chordage, stop-starty, math-pop funtimes category that we all know and love. Bands like Piglet, Hot Club De Paris and Tiny Hawks, for example, do this very well. But I also come across so many bands that, although they do fall into this particularly small pigeonhole, are mind-crushingly dull and have no idea that what they are doing is very, very bad, sloppy and self-indulgent. In a nutshell, it's a pretty hard thing to pull off well - to be able to play intricate and exciting guitar music tightly and with the sort of confidence you only find through years of rocking the live circuit.

Which is exactly what these guys have and exactly why i'm so excited, having trawled through rubbish band after rubbish band to find them.

I literally cannot stop listening to Marvin's Revolt. I tried to put something else on and I really couldn't. You will probably listen to their Myspace and wonder what all the fuss was about and why i'm dribbling over these guys, but you really would be daft to be a fan of this type of music (important if you're going to "get it") and let these guys go without paying them the attention they deserve, as it did take me a few listens to get into what they were all about.

To be honest, Myspace doesn't do them justice as the recordings (I have their cd) are massive sounding and the production is really, really immense. Very roomy and natural. Myspace's compression certainly tries to kill that.

But it fails. They are awesome. Really, really awesome. Check them out. If only for the vocals of 'Multiple Fractures', which, to me, sound a little like an 80's pop song... perhaps by Spandau Ballet??? (?)
