California..

"California's Supreme Court has upheld a ban on same-sex marriage."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8068019.stm

Has anyone seen that movie Milk? You really should, it's amazing.

I pretty much never get political over this subject (with the exception of the shirt i wore at SXSW) because i believe that by fighting the fighters, you feed them. However, I find it sickening that in such an amazing country as the USA, with all their claims of 'freedom', that they have banned same-sex marriage in California. Seriously? Are we animals? is this the 70s?
Its 2009, people! I feel like i barely need to go into this because it's such a ludicrous thought that anyone would care that 2 people who love each other want to get married, regardless of gender, race and whatever else. It's discrimination and it's disgusting, this ban is essentially telling millions of people around the world that what they are born with is 'wrong'.
Even the Governor (did i mention it's Arnold fucking Schwarzenegger?) says homosexuals should have the right to marry - yes the governor! - who is "arnie" - he was in Kindergarden Cop! - aye!!

If you are from CA, go to this website and sign their petition so this hilariously nazi ban can be abolished next year. If you are not, go and give them your support anyway.

I think same sex marriage isn't a fault at all, It's a human right that homosexuals should get. And I totally agree with you that this is 2009 not 70s =)

Anyway, i watched the film 'Milk' Last week and It was really interesting. Sean Penn did great in this.

Yeah, this basically sucks but what Proposition 8 did was change the state constitution of California. Before then, the Californian Supreme Court could vote to legalise same-sex marriage pretty easily, but since the constitutional definition of marriage has now changed, they can't just allow it again that easily, because it would violate the state constitution. Constitutional change is relatively simple to do; it's a complete mess to change again. (Btw Prop 8 was completely undemocratic cause a fucking TINY percentage passed it.)

To amend the constitution again, there will have to be another ballot measure at the next election, which will be the 2010 midterms (I think). So the next chance to legalise same-sex marriage in California will be 2010. However, statistics are on our side; projections show that in it will be likely that voters against same-sex marriage will be in a negligible MINORITY; so a proposition to change the constitution to allow same-sex marriage will be PASSED.

Really same-sex marriage should NEVER have been a ballot proposition in the first place cause of the human rights issue, but what's done is done, and like I said, constitutions are a bitch to change ,and the courts basically had their hands tied here... this doesn't change the fact, however, that anyone who could vote for the active discrimination of ANYONE is a giant smegmaface.

SORRY I'M A HUGE CONSTITUTIONAL DORK but hopefully this whole fucking mess can get sorted out in a year's time.

(Milk is an ace film.)

This does suck, but there is some good news elsewhere in the US. The states of Iowa, Vermont, and Maine recently passed laws allowing gay marriage, and New Hampshire will probably do the same very soon. So things aren't all bad.

Also, the people who vote against gay marriage are mostly really old, and young people support it by a large margin. Wait a few years and the situation will be very different.

as far as i'm aware, the california supreme court is actually pretty against prop 8, and the fact that it was upheld was just due to some amendment vs law mix-up, w/ people like us i think arguing that it was more like a law than anything else.

(i still haven't seen milk)

ps this means that iowa is more progressive than california LOLZ

To quote my 'myspace who I'd like to meet' 'people who think marriage is for two people who love each other and have a healthy relationship (no nambla please) and screw whatever their genitals happen to be.'
homophobia is repulsive and denying marriage in cases like this makes me sick. Eventually this too will pass and common sense will prevail but not soon enough.

What do you mean 'no nambla please'. What have you got against the
North American Marlon Brando Lookalike Association?

IAWTC IAWTC IAWTC

sux when people like katy perry try to trivialize homosexuality as a demonstration of how progressive and cool they are with gays and how society is so accepting of and matter-of-fact towards homosexuals. Because meanwhile, there's this giant civil rights battle occurring (which is currently being lost).

you know what else sucks? Dudes sayin' "i'm cool with gays, as long as they don't try to force it on me." which basically translates to "i'm cool with gays, as long as i don't have to experience them in any way."

and also? straight people with no luck wishing they could go gay.
